Let the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival begin! Ten days (from 17th to 28th of May) of cinemas, international guests, events and glamour catwalks.

Here there is everything that you need to know for the 70th edition of the Film Festival.

70 years of festival, 70 years of great movies

The first news is this one: it’s not any normal edition, but this year, the Cannes Film Festival celebrates its 70 years!

The history of the Festival hasn’t always been consistent, especially at the beginning. The very first edition of the Film Festival was scheduled for September 1939; however, the fact that France was involved in the second World War, made it postpone it to 1946. Moreover, due to some economic problems (and not only those), some editions of the festival were skipped and that’s why they celebrate their 70th anniversary this year (2017).

There have been many unforgettable moments in the history of the Festival. Beginning with the image of the beautiful Brigitte Bardot, who poses in her bikini on the beach of the historic Carlton Hotel and ending with another beautiful woman, Claudia Cardinale, who in the occasion of the presentation of the Visconti’s Gattopardo walked on the beach with a real leopard! This year’s poster of the Festival was made in honour of the beautiful Claudia Cardinale. The poster pictures the actress dancing on a red background. Claudia Cardinale acknowledged to be thrilled and honoured for the poster because that picture, for which she doesn’t even remember who took it, represents the deepest spirit of the Festival then and now.

Cannes Film Festival 2017: the characters of the Festival

Let’s get in the live of the Cannes Film Festival. Besides the movies, for which we will talk about later, the numerous international celebrities that animate the Festival are at the center of attention. Actresses, actors, guests and the jury have already walked on the red carpet, and some people are already betting on the ranking for the best looks. However, on all the curiosities of the most famous French red carpet we will come back later.

Let’s try to find out who are the most talked about characters for this edition of the Festival. First of all, Monica Bellucci, the godmother of the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, that during the opening speech she performed a tango dance that ended with an amazing kiss between Monica and the dancer. Monica Bellucci (52 years old) acknowledged that the French Festival is like a beautiful woman, whose beauty does not depend on the age but on the soul. We can’t not agree on this phrase that comes from a beautiful woman like her. It’s also important to remember that the actress has always had a good relationship with France, probably also due to her love story with the actor Vincent Cassel. The role of the godmother is to open and to end the festival by attending the final ceremony, where the prices will be delivered to the winners.

Let’s now give a closer look to the jury, begging with the President Pedro Almodòvar.

The jury of the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival: from the president to the members of the jury

There is a long lasting relationship between Almodòvar and the Cannes Film Festival. The movie director participated in many editions of the Festival presenting his movies. Last year he presented his last work “Julieta”. Moreover, he was already a member of the jury in 1992, year in which the president of the jury was Gérard Depardieu. Almodòvar acknowledged to be happy and excited for the role he has been assigned and we believe he’s going to be an excellent President.

Who are the members of the jury in this 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival? Let’s begin with Paolo Sorrentino, probably the most international Italian movie director at the moment. Sorrentino won an Oscar with the best foreign movie “La Grande Bellezza”. Moreover, another member of the jury is the movie director Maren Ade, who almost won an Oscar with her latest movie. Also, Will Smith is part of the jury together with the well known Korean movie director Gabriel Chan-wook, the American actress and moviemaker Jessica Chastain, the chinese actress Fan Bingbing and the French Gabriel Yared and Agnès Jaoui. Well, a very outstanding jury from which we hope to hear great feedbacks.

The real protagonists of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival: movies. From the opening movie to those running for the “Gold Palm”.

The opening movie for the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is “Les Fantômes d’Ismaël” (The ghosts of Ismael) directed by the French Arnaud Desplechin. The movie was showed on the first day and its cast is mostly represented  by actresses: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Marion Cotillard, Mathieu Amalric, Louis Garrell, and Alba Rohrwacher.
Last year’s opening movie was “Café Society” directed by Woody Allen. Maybe, this wasn’t one of his best movies, but we’re still talking about a great master among all movie directors.

Let’s discover the movies taking part of the contest.

Sadly, this year any Italian movies have been selected to run for the Gold Palm. However, there are two movies, the first one is called “Fortunata” (Lucky) directed by Sergio Castellitto and the second one is “Après la guerre” (After the war) directed by Zembrano that are part of the section “un certain regard”. Moreover, France runs for the Gold Palm with three movies.

It’s important to know that beside the Official Selection (only movies running for the Gold Palm can take part), the Film Festival is structured in many sections.

Well, we are now all very curious to know who is going to be the winner for the Gold Palm and for “best movie” and of course all other winners for the best actress, best actor, Jury Prize, special Grand Prix of the Jury, the Gold Palm, best short movie, special prize for the sections Un certain Regard, and so on…

In the meantime we can enjoy the gossip related to the catwalks on the red carpet, most famous and glamorous symbol of the Festival, admire the beautiful looks of the celebrities, for example Nicol Kidman, Julianne Moore, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Elle Fanning, Jasmine Trinca and obviously, Monica Bellucci, or we can follow the many events that take part during the week.

For those who would like to take part in some of the events during the Festival, it’s very hard to get tickets now. It’s much easier to find invites in these occasions.

One last curiosity: for the first time at the Festival, movies taking part of the contest are exclusively distributed on Netflix. This choice has already become the topic of many discussions between the members of the jury… We will see what happens…

May the best win!!!
